How to Remove a Bearing From a Shaft

 A bearing puller is utilized to remove unwanted moving parts like pulleys, bearings or gears, which are parts that are always in constant motion. For this reason, they get worn out easily and must be repaired or replaced. Bearings and gears are two essential parts of a lathe. Therefore, it is important to get these parts right when they are being installed.

To begin, a bearing puller consists of a shaft and a collar that run vertically down the shaft. This collar has a screw that fits on top of the screw that runs through the hole in the shaft. The screw guides the rope as it is pulled, and the rope itself is threaded through a series of holes. The collar's thread goes through the holes on the shaft and thus pulls the bearing tooth on and off the shaft.

In order to avoid stripping of stripped threads, it is recommended that you purchase bearing pullers that use a captive screw thread. This allows for the threads on the bearing pullers, to be protected and prevents them from stripping as well. Most of the screws that come with bearing pullers use captive screws, and have a side-release lever that prevents the mechanism from being engaged all the way. Some screws, however, only have a side-release lever and do not have any safety mechanism.

After the bearing puller has been installed and running, you will want to check it for proper rotation. This can be done by placing the tapered eccentric flange nut on the shaft as if it were a nut on the nut cup. If it turns freely, then your bearing puller is aligned properly. If, however, it is not turning correctly, then you need to lubricate the moving parts with an engine grease spray.

After lubricating the moving parts, you should remove the tapered end flange nut and slide the bearing puller completely out of the shaft. Next, install the shaft nut on the same spot where you removed the bearing puller. Make sure that the shaft nut is seated in its grooves and does not bind up or slip free. Then install the two nuts on either side of the shaft so that they form a sealed circle over the shaft.

To install the new bearing puller, first make sure that you have installed all of the necessary hardware. Next, place a jack on the lower side of the shaft as it is level and sit the bearing puller up into the shaft. Install the inner race of the bearing into the semi-cylindrical jaw members. You may need to utilize a ratchet or tightening nut guide to keep the race tightly in place. Tighten the screws so that the retaining ring is tightly held onto the semi-cylindrical jaw members.
